31: Mae
As she stepped outside, Mae looked around for the closest bus stop. Clouds covered the sun, and she shivered, wrapping her arms across her body. She needed to get home, where she could clean up and start thinking about what to do next.
Checking her phone for messages, she walked across the road as a bus pulled to a stop. She got on, thinking she'd rather be anywhere than standing outside the police station having a nervous breakdown.
Fifty minutes later, she arrived home. Her keys were in her bag in Luci's car, so she approached Elle's front door and slid her hand along the divot in the brick above the lintel. Groping blindly, her fingers landed on the small key, and she grabbed it, dusted it off, and went upstairs. Turning it in the lock, she entered her flat.
She gasped at the mess inside. The place had been ransacked. Cushions, sketches, and charcoals covered the floor and her fridge door hung open, the bottles within shattered; a large pool of prosecco seeped through the ancient lino on the floor.
Every cupboard door hung open; some on broken hinges. Her mattress lay half off the bed, the ensemble below covered in rips and tears, and her clothes were everywhere. Stepping over the debris to the bathroom, she saw her meagre collection of beauty products covering the floor. Her shampoo and conditioner were lying empty in glossy puddles on the tiny shower cavity floor. Well, shit, what do I do now? Feeling the dried sweat on her body, Mae strode over to her front door, slammed it shut, and wedged her one dining chair under the knob, not convinced it would keep anyone else, but it made her feel better knowing it was there.
She stood under a hot shower until her skin glowed bright pink. Scooping shampoo and conditioner from the floor, she scrubbed her long hair clean, unused to its weight. Then, turning the cold tap on high, she blasted her body until she shivered under the icy needles.
Dripping wet, she rummaged through the pile of clothing on her floor until she found a towel. Her long damp hair slapped across her back, and she looked again, finding another towel, and wrapping it around her hair turban style. Yikes, long hair is a lot.
Exhausted, she went to the fridge and yelped in pleasure when she noticed a prosecco bottle lying half empty on the top shelf. Picking it up, she closed the fridge and swigged straight from the bottle. The bubbles tasted rancid in her mouth, and she spat them out, trying not to vomit. Ugh, thatâs disgusting. Maybe itâs off.
Shaking her head, she grabbed a protein shake instead, her shoulders releasing their tension as she drank. What do I do now?
When stressed, her usual response involved diving under her covers and lying there until she calmed down, but Ava, Celest, Elle, and Luci were missing; they needed her to be in control. Mae picked up her phone and called Luci again. It went straight to voicemail.
