Chapter Forty-One

“Good afternoon, Les,” Jamie shouted across the showroom. “I’ve manoeuvred the limo out of the showroom for you. It’s on the forecourt, especially valeted by your own lad, wee Gerry, and it’s ready to go. Look, I’ve got your keys here. Do you want to give the vehicle a final look over?”

“I’m sure it’ll be fine, Jamie, but let’s take a look together.”

They went out to the limousine and Les sat in the driver’s seat while Jamie perched on the front passenger seat. Jamie wasn’t quite sure how to approach the subject of wee Gerry, so he decided on a direct approach.

“Les, I hope you don’t mind me asking, but you said my pop knew wee Gerry?”

“Aye, that’s right, Jamie. It was good of him to take my lad on. It’s just like your pop to look out for his pals.”

“Well, that’s just the thing, when I mentioned it to my pop, he said he didn’t know wee Gerry. He said you told him about your boy and wanted us to take him on because he was going off the rails.”

“That’s right. It was a favour to me. My wee Gerry is a wheels man through and through. Always has been. He can drive anything, make a getaway car go faster than a jet on cobble a discreet getaway with a shopping trolley if you want to go unnoticed. He’s not really a bad lad, just no’ on the side of the angels.”

“I’m glad but I’ll not be needing any getaway rides from him here. Do I need to keep an eye on him?”

“Well, I wouldn’t leave him alone with a set of wheels for too long. He might find a use for it that you don’t want to be involved in.”

“He told me about how he lost his nephew, he got right upset. It must have been awful.”

“It was a shock for all the family, but at least he got a niece out of it. Come to think of it, I don’t believe Rowan even changed his name.”

“What do you mean, Les?”

“Wee Gerry’s nephew, my daughter’s boy, my grandson, went the whole hog and had the operation to become a woman. Gerry really couldn’t get his head around it. The whole family found it hard. But I don’t think much else changed. She had always worked with horses and still does. After the op, she moved to work at a different stable. Just to get away from the wagging tongues. She’s up here in Edinburgh, somewhere, but my daughter and her family live in the borders, in Peebles. Lovely town.”

“What was all that hoo hah and weeping I got from wee Gerry about his responsibility to look after his family and how he had never got over losing his nephew so young?”

“You’ll need to ask the lad about that, Jamie. It seems a bit over the top. Mind you, I did my best to help young Rowan, but a lot of the family didn’t adjust to it.”

“You’re bloody right.
