Chapter Forty-One
âGood afternoon, Les,â Jamie shouted across the showroom. âIâve manoeuvred the limo out of the showroom for you. Itâs on the forecourt, especially valeted by your own lad, wee Gerry, and itâs ready to go. Look, Iâve got your keys here. Do you want to give the vehicle a final look over?â
âIâm sure itâll be fine, Jamie, but letâs take a look together.â
They went out to the limousine and Les sat in the driverâs seat while Jamie perched on the front passenger seat. Jamie wasnât quite sure how to approach the subject of wee Gerry, so he decided on a direct approach.
âLes, I hope you donât mind me asking, but you said my pop knew wee Gerry?â
âAye, thatâs right, Jamie. It was good of him to take my lad on. Itâs just like your pop to look out for his pals.â
âWell, thatâs just the thing, when I mentioned it to my pop, he said he didnât know wee Gerry. He said you told him about your boy and wanted us to take him on because he was going off the rails.â
âThatâs right. It was a favour to me. My wee Gerry is a wheels man through and through. Always has been. He can drive anything, make a getaway car go faster than a jet on cobble a discreet getaway with a shopping trolley if you want to go unnoticed. Heâs not really a bad lad, just noâ on the side of the angels.â
âIâm glad but Iâll not be needing any getaway rides from him here. Do I need to keep an eye on him?â
âWell, I wouldnât leave him alone with a set of wheels for too long. He might find a use for it that you donât want to be involved in.â
âHe told me about how he lost his nephew, he got right upset. It must have been awful.â
âIt was a shock for all the family, but at least he got a niece out of it. Come to think of it, I donât believe Rowan even changed his name.â
âWhat do you mean, Les?â
âWee Gerryâs nephew, my daughterâs boy, my grandson, went the whole hog and had the operation to become a woman. Gerry really couldnât get his head around it. The whole family found it hard. But I donât think much else changed. She had always worked with horses and still does. After the op, she moved to work at a different stable. Just to get away from the wagging tongues. Sheâs up here in Edinburgh, somewhere, but my daughter and her family live in the borders, in Peebles. Lovely town.â
âWhat was all that hoo hah and weeping I got from wee Gerry about his responsibility to look after his family and how he had never got over losing his nephew so young?â
âYouâll need to ask the lad about that, Jamie. It seems a bit over the top. Mind you, I did my best to help young Rowan, but a lot of the family didnât adjust to it.â
âYouâre bloody right.
