CHAPTER 19 | IMPRISONED
I looked at Ashley, letting what sheâd just said sink in. But I still didnât understand.
âHow is that even possible?â she asked in response to her own confession. âI donât know you. Weâve never met, but Iâve been dreaming of you for weeks. When I wake up, thereâs this annoying itching sensation in my brain as more information from the dreams comes back.â Ashley pointed at her head, her eyes glazing over as she relived the moments she was talking about. âThe more I try to push them away, the more incessant the sensation becomes until it burns. Thatâs...not normal.â She looked down at the photo, running her index finger over the image of our son. It seemed she wasnât really looking for answers, or maybe I was just too shocked to formulate any right now. âAnd yet thereâs this.â Her eyes found mine again. âWhere did you get this?â
I sighed sadly. âIt was taken shortly before the accident.â
âAccident?â
I nodded, but didnât say anything else. Sheâd been resistant to hearing me before. It was possible Iâd have to let her lead this conversation if she was going to accept the truth for what it was.
âI still donât understand.â She lifted her face, her blue eyes filled with questions. âI donât know you, but this photo says otherwise. How is that even possible?â
Even though I was sure to regret what I was about to do, I grabbed the key off the table, unlocked the cage, and stepped inside. Ashley watched as I avoided touching the bars, the look in her eyes curious and calculating. I closed the door and tossed the key back toward the table. I over-estimated the distance, and it hit the far end of the table before sliding off and onto the floor with a clang. I shrugged it off, deeming it low on my list of priorities.
Ashley stood up, and my posture stiffened, waiting for her attack. She only looked at me, but I kept my guard up, because I was afraid the second I didnât, she might strike.
It was what I would do if the roles were reversed.
âItâs all so confusing,â she said, her forehead creasing. âAll Iâve ever known was that your kind is evil. That they should be eradicated...â
âThatâs not all youâve ever known,â I offered, staying in place as she walked toward me.
She stopped six inches from me, looking up and meeting my gaze. Her blue eyes danced back and forth between mine, and she swallowed thickly. âItâs not?â
Without really thinking it through, I reached out and took her hand. She flinched at first, but allowed it. My entire body relaxed as the familiar hum that accompanied Ashleyâs touch thrummed through me. It was as though the last fifteen years never happened. Like weâd never been apart. I was captivated by her intense blue eyes, and nothing else seemed to register.
âI know everything is a little hazy, Ashââshe inhaled a shaky breath, and I saw a glimmer of recognition in
