Chapter Twenty-Eight

DCI Allan Mackay called the room to order. He saw that Bear, Mel and Angus were still tucking into bacon rolls, while Colin Reid was in the middle of peeling a tangerine.

“I don’t suppose any of you could find the time to eat at home before you get here, could you?” he grumbled.

“Only Jane and I manage that, Sir,” Rachael said.

“I hope you’re not feeling too virtuous, DC Anderson. You both seem to be armed with mugs of tea.”

Before Mackay could comment further, he saw Hunter come into the briefing room. He was carrying a large mug of coffee from the coffee maker in his office. Mackay smiled as a round of applause met Hunter’s entry.

“I can tell you are all as pleased as I am to witness the return of DI Hunter Wilson,” he said. “I read your statement and you have identified former DC John Hamilton as having broken into your home and then driven you away against your will. Can you tell us what on earth happened, DI Wilson? And why? And then you can tell me why you are not still in the hospital!”

Hunter shrugged. “I can’t tell you everything, to be honest. I was out cold for a great deal of the time that I was with John Hamilton, and struggling with Brian Squires for the rest of it. The brute force of Squires is not to be sneezed at.”

“Why does Hamilton feel so violently towards you, Boss?” Tim asked. “That was a nasty attack.”

“He seems to blame the team in general, and me in particular, for the fact that he left the police force.”

“But he resigned, rather than being disciplined for taking cocaine,” Colin said. “Everything that went wrong for him was his own fault.”

“It makes no sense. He made his own choices. Bad ones, but they were his choices,” Jane said.

“Yes they were. Nice to see you back, by the way, DS Renwick, in your new official capacity,” Hunter smiled. “But if the going gets tough, it is always easier to blame someone else than to accept your own faults.”

“True enough,” Mackay nodded. “So he bundled you into a red Volkswagen car to punish you because he resigned from the force?”

“More or less. He said that he wanted me to suffer as much he had,” Hunter said.

“And did he see this ending well?” Bear asked.

“There were times when I didn’t see it ending at all, Bear. Brian Squires was in the back with me and he is a big beast of a man.” Hunter grimaced. “When I saw Hamilton had teamed up with Brian Squires, my heart sank, because Squires is never good news.”

“But to be fair, Boss, Squires doesn’t have the brains he was born with. He is just the muscle any time he’s involved,” Mel said.

“True, but as far a sheer force goes, you won’t get much stronger,” Hunter said.

“Brian Squires? We heard that name yesterday, didn’t we Sir?” Angus said to Mackay.

“We did, but let’s get to the end
