Chapter Eight

Spence’s heart raced as he moved down the street. His skin buzzed from hiding in the shadows and watching as X spied on four men on the Lower West Side. They were in plain clothes, but the car was one of the kind undercover cops drove. Spence couldn’t hear the conversation, but those cops meeting in Baratta’s territory looked suspicious.

Plus, the fact that X was there had to mean something, even if he didn’t understand it yet.

X hadn’t done anything but watch the men, his finger pressed to his ear.

Apprentice split off at one point, and Spence left him to it.

When nothing exciting happened, and the men drove away without X attacking them, Spence took off as well.

When he got back to the room, Hunter was there, pacing a hole in the carpet. His eyes widened and he tugged on the hem of his shirt. He looked like hell—his lip was puffy and split and he winced with every step.

“What happened to you?” Spence asked and peeled off his hoodie and outer shirt. “Was Roberts there? Did he do something to you and—”

Hunter was still fully clothed, besides the mask, and Spence didn’t know how he could stand the weight of the bulletproof vest. He ran a hand through his hair, and his shoulder’s slumped. “He’s gone. Good as dead.”

Spence grabbed Hunter’s hands. He was still wearing his gloves, the slick leather ones that matched his jacket. “You killed him?”

“No, but. . . .” Hunter took a breath. Let it out. He wouldn’t meet Spence’s eyes. “That fake X was there and he, sort of, knew things. About me. A lot of things. Sounds like he knows stuff about you too.”

“What did he say?” Spence asked, his breath catching in his throat. Was it about his powers? His father?

“He knew all about my family and my past. It freaked me the fuck out, and I wanted to find you but—shit,” Hunter said and tugged on the end of his curls.

Spence stepped closer. He’d never seen Hunter like this. He was always so cool and laid back, he didn’t freak out. Not the way Spence himself did. “That’s all he said?”

“Yeah. Sort of. He said your name was Spencer Bennett, and you might have more secrets than me, but I don’t see why that’s important. I don’t care what kind of stupid secrets you have because they aren’t gonna hurt me. And mine aren’t gonna hurt you.”

Spence frowned, squeezing Hunter tighter. “What did he know about you?”

A blush spread over Hunter’s cheeks. “He knew what I liked, okay? He knew what it was like when I first hit the streets.”

“You really think that guy will. . . .” Spence let his sentence trail off when Hunter winced.

“Probably. Fuck. He threatened to knock me out, and I couldn’t beat that guy no matter what I did.”

A tremor ran through Hunter’s body—Spence felt as if it charged up his own. He pressed into Hunter’s chest and squeezed his back lightly. “It’s not your fault, and Roberts deserved it.
