Chapter 14

Sienna

"Can you pass the clotted cream, please?"

I watched, enveloped in a sort of surreal wonder, as Bee handed a cut crystal bowl full of fluffy, white cream to the Queen, who nodded in thanks.

Who would've thought, four weeks before, that I'd be seated at the dining table of the Queen's keep set in the heart of Werewolf Territory having a proper British high tea, while my vampire enemy/lover was imprisoned just down the hall?

Certainly not me. In fact, I shifted uncomfortably in my chair as I realized how wrong I'd gotten it all. I'd imagined the Territories to be a lawless, ruthless land of untold horrors. And, don't get me wrong, in a lot of ways they were. But then there were things…people…places that made me wonder…

Were they all that different than us? From humans?

We fought vicious wars and committed horrible atrocities on one another. There was slavery, and torture, and subjugation of women for centuries.

But there was also beauty, and kindness, and love. Surely, the same held true here?

"This is the best Victoria sponge I've ever eaten in my entire life," Bee announced before taking another hearty bite of the delicate cake.

Diana inclined her head with a smile. "I'll be sure to tell the chef. She'll be pleased to hear it." She stared at the tower of scones, petit fours and sandwiches before us and the smile slid from her face. "Usually, we have mixed berry tarts as well, but most berries have been in short supply since the weather has gotten so erratic…" she cleared her throat and shook her head, the furrow in her brow smoothing. "Well, there's nothing to be done about it today, at any rate. Let's just enjoy, shall we?"

I took a half-hearted bite of my smoked salmon blini and gave her a thumbs' up. "So good."

It wasn't a lie. The food was delicious, but my appetite was sorely lacking. After a terrible night's sleep, tossing and turning, replaying the evening before in my mind obsessively, I'd woken up on the wrong side of the bed. And, in the hours since, nothing seemed to improve my mood.

Bee had buzzed around, chattering endlessly about our escape plans. That should've been comforting, knowing that I wasn't alone in this quest anymore. Instead, though, it just made it all the more real. We were going to leave this place soon enough. If we failed, I'd sentenced all three of us to death or worse. If we succeeded, I'd never see Dominic again.

There was a time that would've seemed like the ultimate win.

Now, though? After feeling him move inside me…after knowing what it could be like between us? I wasn't so sure.

As I stared all my potential futures straight in the face, every one of them left me feeling cold inside.

Diana had clearly set aside her own earlier worries, because she was currently chowing down a sausage roll with a groan of pleasure. Luckily her eyes were closed, because when I spared a glance at Bee, she was shoving handfuls of pecans into her pockets.
