Tate frowned, his eyes darting between where Hunter stood and Avery Winters as she left the market. Hunter’s attraction to the girl was glaringly obvious, despite his denials. He was riding the edge of temptation, something that could not only ruin his career but jeopardize his freedom. The High Council was not known for forgiveness or mercy.

His wolf should know better than to risk upsetting the alpha.

Tate smirked. We don’t always do as the alpha commands either, he pointed out.

We are clever about our betrayals. The alpha will never catch us. Hunter and his beast don’t even try to hide the longing in their eyes. The girl will cause trouble for them. If we allow the situation to fester, we risk losing Hunter. Our next partner may not be quite so blinded to our plans, his wolf said thoughtfully. The girl needs to be eliminated.

How? We can’t just kill her. It will draw too much attention. Tate frowned.

His wolf was silent for several moments. The girl is clearly not the vampire. Even witchcraft cannot glamour this well. She is either an innocent or a witch involved with the vampire. Either way, her demise will be the same. She will die in the crossfire.

Hunter won’t believe it. Tate stroked the stubble that marred his chin. And if he does, he won’t easily forgive us taking the girl out. Even if it was an “accident.”

Then we trick the vampire into killing her. It’s obvious the creature lacks control. One small nick from an errant claw and her blood will send the creature into a frenzy. She’ll be collateral damage. We help Hunter kill the vampire, and he’ll be in our debt.

Tate chuckled. Sure. In the meantime, I think our account needs a little fattening, don’t you?

The wolf grinned before retreating to leave him to his devices. Pulling his phone from his pocket, he allowed the phone to ring twice before hanging up. His contact would understand the message and transfer the funds as usual.

Whistling a tune, he turned away from the market and headed back to his hotel.
