Chapter 10

The next day, Harper was neck-deep in old maps at the library during some downtime. Martin managed to dig out a few decades-old maps they had in the reference section that nobody ever wanted to look at.

Spread out on the table in front of her, Harper could see what Martin meant about the map being drawn in a similar style to old maps.

“So this would imply that the map was drawn a while ago and not by Leonard,” said Harper.

“That’s my impression,” Martin said. “What was the symbol you found on that boulder?”

Harper pulled the image up on her phone and showed it to him. She had no idea what the crudely carved triangle in the boulder meant.

“Interesting. It looks like it’s been there for a while,” he said.

“That’s what I thought, which could mean that Carter Shaw carved it into the boulder.”

“It makes me think of a trinity—the three points and all of that. But I don’t know what it means.”

Harper sighed. “None of us do. Even Greg didn’t seem to know.”

Martin nodded. “I’m afraid this is where my expertise runs out.”

“Thanks for the help. I’m starting to see double from staring at these old maps for so long, so I think I’ll take a short break,” Harper said.

“Go take half an hour. The library is pretty quiet today.”

Smiling, she said, “Thanks. I’ll be back soon.”

Grabbing her purse, Harper knew exactly where to go—Bouncing Beans. A quick coffee would perk her up and then she could focus on her work again. On the way out of the library, she found Emma at the front desk dropping off another box of books to donate.

“Hi, Emma. More books for us?” Harper asked.

“Yes. There will be more, but that’s all I could carry for now,” Emma said.

“We appreciated the last box,” Harper said but left out the part about the map. If she killed Leonard, then there was no way Harper was going to tell her about the map.

“I’m glad.”

“Do you have a few minutes to chat? I was about to go get coffee. I’ll treat you if you have a little time,” Harper offered, smiling at her.

“Sure. Coffee would be nice, so long as we’re not surrounded by those treasure hunters,” Emma said, shaking her head and shivering slightly like the thought of being around them made her skin crawl.

“We can go sit on the boardwalk. I think they’ve decided Bouncing Beans is their base camp for some reason. Why don’t I get the coffee and meet you down on the boardwalk? That way, you don’t have to go near them.”

“That would be nice. Thank you.”

“I’ll see you in a few minutes,” Harper said, waving to her before she left the library and headed over to Bouncing Beans. Thankfully, she didn’t see Rodney around anywhere.

Rushing inside, she spotted Libby behind the counter and hurried up to her.

“Quick, give me two iced lattes to go,” Harper told Libby.

“Got a hot date? Marc doesn’t strike me as an iced latte man. I should know considering how much black coffee he drinks,” Libby said.
