Chapter Four

Wade

About two hours later, my mom and Chloe start setting the table. It irks me to no end that my Aunt, Uncle, and cousin sit and do nothing. I offer to help in the kitchen and to set the table, but Mom and Chloe shoo me out of there telling me they have everything handled.

I love how close Mom and Chloe are. Chloe is already a part of the family. Now I need to make it official. I’m still trying to figure out how I want to go about this. I want it to be perfect, but I don’t know what that is yet. Seeing her so at home with my family only goes to prove what I already know, Chloe Sweets is the perfect woman for me.

“Time for dinner,” Mom comes into the living room and says.

My eyes are on Chloe as I get up and walk toward the dining room table. She’s smiling at something my mom is telling her. I’m captivated by how beautiful she looks as she tucks a lock of hair behind her ear that I don’t notice Mike walk up until he’s standing next to Chloe. My parents’ table is set for seven. One chair on each end, three chairs on one side, and two on the other. Mike pulls out a chair for Chloe to sit down and she lets him. He even grabs her napkin and lays it in her lap before snagging the seat beside her and sitting down. Chloe looks at me and shrugs her shoulders as if saying ‘what are you going to do?’ I’m tempted to make him move or physically remove him from the seat. I’m deciding which when my mom grabs my attention.

“Wade come sit over here by me,” She says, patting the side of the table across from Chloe. My Chloe, not Mike’s.

Surrendering defeat, I nod and take the seat, but inside I’m raging. The kiss on the cheek was bad enough, but that was my spot. Now he’s sitting next to my woman, flirting with her, and I can’t do anything about it because I haven’t had the courage to make her mine, yet. It’s my fault, but Mike is still pissing me off.

Dad starts us off by saying a blessing, and of course Mom insists we all hold hands while we pray. Opening one eye, I catch the fucker rubbing her hand with his thumb and I about lose it. The blessing is over quickly and I’m able to calm myself down. We start passing the platters and bowls around so everyone can fill their plates, but I keep getting distracted, staring at Mike and Chloe. I keep holding up the passing of food every time mom tries giving me something. It gets so bad that at one point, she kicks my leg under the table and gives me a hard stare.

“Shit.”

“Are you okay?” Chloe asks, looking concerned.

‘I am now that you aren’t paying attention to my damn cousin.’ Is what I want to say, but I don’t.
