“How about you and me take a weekend road trip before school starts? See more of Texas? There are those Cadillacs stuck in the ground somewhere. Ooh! Or we could go to that water park in New Braunfels!” Mom finds me in the kitchen making a quesadilla for lunch. She’s been working from home this week, which makes my Jade investigation a lot more difficult. More than once I’ve pretended to be talking to Eleanor on my phone instead of to the dead girl egging me on to touch the wall or poke the floorboards.

I’m about to say no—Jade and I are still deep in clue-gathering mode and we’ve gotten nowhere—but then maybe getting out of my haunted house might be the break I need to come back and really focus on our investigation and make some progress?

“That actually sounds like it might be good.”

Mom looks so pleased. “Sweet. I’ll ask around for recommendations on cool, cheap places to stay. I want some motel that looks like the set of a 1950s horror movie.” And with that Mom practically skips out of the kitchen and up the stairs.

“You can’t go away! We have so much to do!”

I turn to see Jade with her hands on her hips, momentarily looking more like an old auntie scolding me instead of a kid my age. “Jade, my dude, please enhance your calm.”

This only seems to make her more upset. “Please don’t make a joke of this, Molly. This is my existence we’re talking about! You’re about to go to school all day for months; we need to get as much work done as possible while you still have time for me.”

Aaaaarrrgggggh. I’m not in the mood for this. I walk into the living room and throw myself face down on the couch. I hear the floorboards creak and feel a whoosh of cold air as Jade follows.

“Molly! I know you think you have all the time in the world, all living people do, but weeks and months go by fast. Before you know it, you’ll be packing up and you’ll leave without so much as a backward glance my way. Please don’t go away even for a day.”

This is too much. I sit up. “Look, Jade, I gotta have a life. I’m willing to devote most of it to helping you, but I need to be able to do other things. Like go on road trips with my mom or have other friends.” Saying other friends feels so weird.

Something perks up in Jade. “So … we really are friends?”

“What? Of course we’re friends. We’ve been over this before.”

Jade suddenly looks very small and childlike again. She shifts her weight, looks at her feet. “You’re the first friend I’ve ever had, Molly.”

“Honestly, this is new to me too. I’ve never really had friends either, but I think I could? And that’s because of you. So, really, if you think about it, you’re, like, my best friend.” It’s my turn to look down.

“Really?” I hear Jade say.
