Chapter Twelve

When she appeared in the room, Andy waved from her desk, where he played on a black electronic device. “Hey, Zita. All quiet so far. Wyn’s been doing paperwork all morning, and now she’s on a private call that isn’t going well, so be warned. She’ll be all over your date.” Raising his voice, he called out, “Wyn, Zita’s back.” Glancing over, his welcoming smile faltered, and his face turned grim.

If she’s busy, it might be better to get a shower and give Wyn time to cool down before we talk. Zita hobbled over to set down the picnic things by the closet and shapeshifted back to her own human form. A trickle of blood dripped from under her capris, warm droplets gliding down her calf.

Wyn bustled into the room, flicking off her phone and sliding it into a pocket. She stopped, concern on her beautiful face, then circled Zita, her wariness like that of someone approaching a wounded animal. “Errands and a date do not cause that. Remus didn’t…”

As Andy poked a few buttons on his game, the screen went dark. “She’s limping, too.”

“He didn’t do anything wrong. We didn’t click. No big.” Zita tried to wipe mud off her face, stopping when she realized she was just spreading it around, and squared her shoulders. With a sigh at the laundry, she rubbed her hands on her pants, smearing more red dirt on the fabric. “I did have errands to run and a date. If you could spare a quick heal, that would be awesome, but it’s not critical. Why don’t you do that and then get back to what you were doing? I’ll grab a shower and start chopping stuff so we can have alambres for dinner later. I can fill you in at dinner.”

Relief had spread across Wyn’s face before her expression hardened again.

Andy set down his game with a crack. He picked it back up and checked it, frowning. “You’re covered in muck, hurt, and suggesting we go back to playing? Plus, weren’t you wearing a shirt earlier? Z, you know we’re not that stupid.”

Wyn snapped first. “You’re the only one in the room with a food obsession. What asinine thing did you do this time?” She strode forward, growling out the words to her spell. As if unable to stop herself from healing the injury, her hand sought Zita’s arm, sparkling magic already twining around it.

“Nothing stupid.” Zita scrambled to think of a diplomatic way to tell them her brilliant plan of staking out the museum had ended in the loss of the haft of the Key and getting beaten up by an oversized wolf. She grimaced. Oye, that does sound bad.

Wyn’s eyes widened. “You surveilled the museum, lost the second piece of the artifact, and suffered an ignominious defeat by a colossal wolf? You said you were going on a date! Is anything you say true?” She glared at Zita’s leg, even as the cool touch of her magic soothed and healed the bite.
