CITIES AS DISTRIBUTORS (1976)
How do cities shape the lives of those who live in them? In the late 1960s, the eruption of violent protest in Paris, Chicago and Los Angeles alerted social scientists and politicians to the unequal distribution of resources, from housing and schooling to medical services and open space, between and within urban communities. The Marxist geographer David Harvey’s Social Justice and the City (1974) offered the most radical diagnosis of the problem. Stretton’s, influenced by the milder tone of Australian debate, as well as by his social-democratic inclinations, was characteristically subtle and attentive to historical contingency.
