Shiny new tanks soak up the history at Brotherhood Winery. Courtesy of Brotherhood Winery.
The company found a winemaking family (the Casellas) who were willing to play ball and grow grapes for the company. There have been vague accusations in the industry that Yellow Tail (like many other large-scale wine companies) tampers with the levels of acidity and tannins in the wine to deliver an even more quaffable, sweet sip for consumers. The accusations have never been proven.
In addition to going for notes of soda and orange juice, Yellow Tail aggressively marketed the wine with a cartoon-like kangaroo on its labelâthe first in the industry to push wine with a label that, on its face, would appeal to juveniles, now a common practice.
If Yellow Tail was setting out to appeal to high school kids, it couldnât have taken a more targeted approach. Itâs a cynical method of wine selling and one that refuses to challenge or educate consumers, setting out to intoxicate them, literally and metaphorically, with flashy graphics and an appeal to the lowest common denominator of their palates.
To put that in perspective, the biggest producer in the Hudson Valley, Brotherhood Winery, manages to put out about fifty thousand cases per year, and much of that is sourced from grapes outside of the Hudson Valley proper, in the Finger Lakes and on Long Island.
The Hudson Valley wine region will always be a series of small wineries bearing quirky grapes, staffed by individuals with sky-high ideals who just dream of making great wine, even if that requires sheep poop in a cave. And you know what? That makes it a safer, cleaner and much tastier place to visit, live and drink.
