Causes of Low T

The most common cause of androgen deficiency is low production of luteinizing hormone (LH) by the pituitary gland. In fact, when testosterone levels are low, the pituitary gland should actually produce high levels of LH in an attempt to stimulate the testicles to produce more testosterone. The decrease in LH production in the middle-age and older men occurs for unknown reasons. With the decrease in LH from the pituitary gland, the testicles are not stimulated to produce testosterone. This condition is called secondary hypogonadism. On rare occasions, this can be caused by a benign tumor of the pituitary gland that can only be diagnosed with a special imaging scan, the magnetic resonance imaging or MRI, when suspected.
