Speed Takes Control
Zara, a Spanish clothing company (from an interview with a senior executive of a large American clothing brand—which has no in-house manufacturing)
“The King of Speed is Zara. Everybody wants the short-cycle, speed-to-market Zara model, but unless you control your mills the way Zara does, quick-turn is nearly impossible. Without this kind of local control, you won’t switch product development from six to seven months to two months. Zara has it all in one box: from design to fabric to assembly to transportation. Other wholesalers have production everywhere—Sri Lanka, Jordan, South Africa—and 80 to 90 cents per garment to ship by air will kill your profit. Moreover, unless you control your mills, as Zara does, you cannot convince mill owners to leave their lines open and machines available for last-minute runs.”
