One form of ad hominem fallacy is called âguilty by association,â where we judge a person based on the company they keep rather than on who they are as people. We might assume that someone whose family members have been involved in crime are necessarily less trustworthy, or that people who belong to a religion associated with terrorism must also be terrorists, simply by association.
Another example is to attack or disagree with a claim not because of what it is, but because of where it comes from. Many people will refuse to accept a logical and sound argument if it comes from their opposing political party or from a social group they disagree with on other topics. For example, a man might make a valid criticism about feminism, but his argument may be dismissed because he is a man and not a woman. The logical and rational thing to do would be to look at the people, the arguments they make and the actions they choose in isolation, and consider them on their own virtues. While these knee-jerk reactions and prejudices may occasionally be true, consciously removing this fallacy from your cognitive repertoire will undoubtedly improve the quality of your thinking.
