The remaining three steps, discussed in the following three chapters, are aimed at understanding that this sort of âI,â which we believe in so much and which drives so much of our behavior, actually is a figment of the imagination. This solid âIâ does not exist at all. For the subsequent steps to work, it is crucial to identify and stay with this strong sense of a self-instituting âI.â
Meditative Reflection
Imagine that someone else criticizes you for something you actually have not done, pointing a finger at you and saying, âYou ruined such-and-such.â
Watch your reaction. How does the âIâ appear to your mind?
In what way are you apprehending it?
Notice how that âIâ seems to stand by itself, self-instituting, established by way of its own character.
