Differences Between Verbal and Nonverbal Communication

While decoding both verbal and nonverbal communication has the same broad aims, how we do this decoding is markedly different. The reason for this is that despite both being mediums for communication, they present what a person is thinking in different ways.

The most crucial key distinction is that because nonverbal communication does not use "words" as part of its language, we, therefore, must use a higher level of scrutiny when trying to decode what a person's nonverbal communication is saying. It means that there is a far greater chance of error, which is why it is essential to look at what a person is saying. Also, observe several different parts of their nonverbal communication to try to verify the meaning.

Verbal communication is also much faster. When we enter into a conversation, a large amount of information can be exchanged over a short space of time. Because of this, verbal shifts in meaning happen quickly. However, nonverbal communication tends to work much slower. Feelings slowly seep to the surface and present as posture changes, facial expressions, and gestures. All of this can change in the course of a conversation. However, the presentation of information happens at a much slower rate.
