What’s in a (Paint) Name?

When learning how to mix colors, it is important to experiment for yourself rather than rely on printed charts. Each paint manufacturer names and creates their colors differently, so there is a lack of uniformity of colors even if they have the same name. Acrylic formulas will not only differ from oils, but also from other acrylic brands.

For instance, when using a certain brand of oil paints, the Cadmium Red Medium mixed with Cadmium Yellow Medium makes a beautiful, brilliant orange. However, those same colors mixed in acrylics result in a much duller orange. Experimentation is the best way to learn.
