THE DRIVE ISNâT far but by the time we arrive back to her friendâs house, sheâs dozed off. I sit here and admire her beauty for a moment before I place a hand on her thigh and squeeze her a little.
âWifey,â I whisper. In my mind, sheâs already mine. Iâm just waiting for her to be done with this divorce. Until then, I speak what I want into existence and I do so freely only because I knew she didnât hear me.
âHmm,â she hums softly.
âWeâre back, Indigo.â
She moans and stretches â sounds so sweet. âWhatâd you say?â I can hear her bones waking up.
âI said weâre back.â
She looks around, recognizing where we are. âOh.â She stretches again, looks at me and says, âOkay. I guess Iâll see you at some point next week.â
I donât like the sound of that at all. âYou guess?â
She smiles faintly. âYou know what I mean.â
âWhy donât you tell me what you mean.?â
âI mean after everything with Micah on MondayâIâuhâI donât know how Iâll be so Iâll call you when I can.â
âOkay,â I tell her. âJust donât forget about me.â
âI wonât.â
âAnd Iâll check on you, too. If you get a text from me, please respond so Iâll know youâre okay.â
âWill do.â
I step out of the car, take the bouquet of roses from the backseat, then open her door. âAnd these are for you, by the way,â I tell her as she takes my hand.
âRomelloâ¦when did you have time to stop for flowers? Was I knocked out that long?â
âNo. I bought these initially when I thought we were going on our planned date. I put them in the backseat when our plans changed and forgot about them.â
âWell, theyâre gorgeous. Thank you for making me get out and do something. Iâm sorry I ruined our date.â
âNo worries. Weâll have plenty more opportunities.â
âWill we?â she asks, her cheeks flushed.
âYes.â I lean in to press my lips against her temple. Iâd much rather kissed her lips but Iâm trying hard to be respectful. âHave a good night, Indigo.â
âYou as well, Romello.â
She wraps her arms around me. For a moment, Iâm in heaven â lost somewhere in time where there is no beginning and no end. Thatâs how good it feels for her to be this close to me. As much as I claimed to not want to be this close to a woman again, I feel right at home with my bomboncita.
When she releases me, I say, âCall me anytime, day or night, it doesnât matter.â
âOkay.â
âGood luck on Monday.â
âThank you.â
