THE BIG CLEANUP

When accidents occur, a big mistake made by many cat owners is in their choice of a cleaning agent. Almost every good home-maker grabs for a bottle of ammonia or a cleanser that contains ammonia. But, have you ever picked up a baby’s dirty diaper after it’s been sitting around for too long? Whew! that ammonia smell will get to you in no time! Both urine and stool contain a form of ammonia. By cleaning up accidents with ammoniated products, as far as the cat is concerned, you’re pouring something on the floor with an odor that is almost identical to the one you’re trying to get rid of. You might as well send Kitty a written invitation asking her to return to the scene of the crime. It’s like saying, “That’s a good cat, go potty over here, and over there by the chair, and under the dining room table, and while you’re at it how about doing a little by the bed?” Not a pretty picture, is it?

Avoid the cleanup trap by purchasing a product that is an odor neutralizer (available at better pet shops). These products will actually neutralize the odor through the enzymes or similar reagents it contains. Be sure the product label specifically states that it is a neutralizer. Many products merely mask or cover up the odor for the human’s sense of smell but aren’t nearly effective enough for Kitty’s keener olfactory sense.

Don’t assume that a professional carpet-cleaning service is the answer, either. Some of these companies use products that are chosen for their effectiveness in eliminating dirt and odors for human beings. Just because everything smells fine to us, little Kitty still knows where she’s been. Always ask what the products contain. Be sure there are no forms of ammonia in the cleaning agent and ask the cleaning professionals if your odor neutralizer can be added to their solution. If the carpet cleaning company will do this, it will save you a lot of time and aggravation.

Shampooing the carpets yourself? Read the labels carefully to be sure the combination of chemicals won’t cause a health hazard for you, the cat, or anything else that lives under your roof.
