Chapter Eleven

Isat on the couch, numbly watching a hologram program about two rival Fae who had some type of love-hate relationship at work. Of course, we knew they would end up together, but, in the meantime, they had to come together to deal with some sort of sabotage at their company. It was a new limited series that gave me all the romantic feels I enjoyed, but tonight, my mind kept wandering away to a certain Nodoorian Fae and a dream that set my soul on fire.

The whole affair still unsettled me, but a part of me also wondered what he’d be like in reality. Just the memory of that dream, his mouth on me as if it were real, made my pulse race. And why did he have to be so darn considerate? When I returned home from my brunch, I found one of my favorite desserts from the bakery Lila owned and a note of apology sitting on the counter in the kitchen for me.

The chime of my doorbell startled me into the present. I didn’t usually get unexpected guests, so naturally, I was cautious. I got off the couch and tiptoed quietly to the front door. It could be anybody or anything at the door. I looked through the peephole and found Ivan standing there, waving at me as if he could see I was staring at him. Maybe he could. That would be disturbing.

I unlocked and opened the door. “Ivan? What’s going on? I thought Aaron was with you.”

Ivan nodded, pointing his thumb out behind him. “He is. He’s sitting in the transporter, being stubborn. Long story short, your husband’s rut has come on.”

I widened my eyes in shock. The news is freezing me. Alpha ruts were similar to omega heats, except they came on fewer times a year and didn’t last as long. Both had the same primitive need for breeding and sex. “Why did you bring him here?”

Ivan snorted, and, for the first time, I noticed he looked cut and bruised. What the hell had he been up to? “That’s the same question your husband had. It seems you both don’t know how the omega-alpha relationship works.”

I wrinkled my nose. “Is that why he beat you up?”

Ivan waved a dismissive hand. “He didn’t do this. We got into a bit of an altercation at a bar, and then there was a whole beast attack thing, but don’t focus on that now. We resolved it. Help me get your husband inside.”

I slipped on some shoes at the door, panic making my heart jump. Was Aaron more wounded than Ivan let on? “He can’t walk?”

“He can walk. He’s just being stubborn. He wanted me to take him to my place so he could sit out his rut in suffering. I thought that was stupid when he had a perfectly good omega wife at home to help him. Surely, you’d help your husband, right?” He batted his bright green eyes as if it would work on me.

I started to close the door.
