In each area, the table shows what a transcultural leader needs to think about and what they need to do daily within the community to achieve all four points. When those four points are being developed is when the energy should flow and lead to a better understanding of the cultural differences and mindsets and how they can help the business flourish within different markets. This is the power of transcultural leadership; when you start to understand and engage, you begin to think differently, too. By embedding this into the community, the overall business will grow.

How can you be sure you will understand and integrate the four sections into your workspace? You can use the grid above to help plot your ideas. These are the concepts that can assist the community foundations to grow with more cultural awareness from an earlier start.

The important thing for you to remember while developing your transcultural grid, and with anything else that you are doing to improve the community, is to think, “What will come from this?” You can link this back to the community circle that I shared with you at the very beginning. Think of what you are putting in and what will come out of it. The transcultural elements are just an enhancement of this; you are going to put each of the four corners in to help grow into new markets. But, think about which markets are your current targets. Where do you want to go, and with what products or services?

The one thing that I have noticed while working with different nationalities and helping them build a community in their business is the cultural differences. You could say that from the knowledge I have gained, transcultural leadership is even more important than ever.

Businesses in different countries have very different working cultures, despite some of them being far ahead of technological advancements and open to a world of start-ups. This must be a shock to some people in these destinations when they reach a business that is bigger, or when a company begins with just the founder, and then they start to grow or work with other representatives. What I have found interesting is that many people wish to strive for this community way of thinking and working. However, there are some cultural differences in a society that prevent them from successfully doing this.

When speaking with people in Israel, culture is viewed as very hierarchical and power focused which makes current planning in the business difficult to achieve. It sits in well with the theory that Charles Handy produced when he spoke about the power of culture in an organization. This doesn’t happen in this country alone; when I look back at managing a department in the UK, I realize I have worked in these groups. One business in particular seemed to have the entrepreneurial culture of power with the primary source of energy, which was more focused on empire building rather than developing. This created high social capital and helped people thrive.
