Chapter 18

You're a henchman. Courage is a last resort.

– Tickles the Elf, The Henchman’s Survival Guide

Horns points his laz pistol at me. I don’t even bother going for my lasso. This is my end. I’ll be fried in the dust next to Adan. This abandoned town will be our graves.

Horns glances at Shadow.

Shadow shakes his head.

Horns shrugs and sticks the laz pistol on his waist. I don’t understand, not until Horns cracks his knuckles and begins taking slow, heavy steps toward me.

He’s not going to shoot me.

Why?

Shadow shook his head. He’s calling the shots. Would frying me have been too easy? Too painless? Is this some kind of test for Horns?

I don’t know, but I also don’t care. I have a chance, slim as it is.

Run, my mind screams. If I can get away, I might be able to hide in one of the houses, call a car or maybe even a cape… other than the one crumpled in the dust next to me.

Adan. I glance down at him. His face is smeared with dust. He isn’t moving. How strong was that laz shot and how much protection did Adan’s fancy shirt offer?

He could be fried through and through.

But maybe not. And if there’s a chance he’s alive, then I’ve got to fight.

I pull the lasso from my belt.

“What you got, little girl?” Horn asks, his voice a cruel rumble. I swing the lasso over my head. Horns watches with a bemused smile. His eyes and lips are the only things I can see beneath his black mask. I toss the lasso. The nanotech in the rope senses his proportions and opens wide. I let the rope fall over him until it’s almost at his knees. Horns looks at me, a shade of uncertainty flickering in his beady eyes. I pull. The lasso tightens then grows taunt. I throw my body back for more leverage. Horns stumbles and his big body crashes forward. I fall backward onto my ass.

Horns snarls. He grabs the rope in both hands, pulls, and snaps it in half. I stare in shock. My rope was reinforced with metallic fibers to make it extra strong. While my brain is recalculating how absolutely blighted I am, Horns grabs the splintered end of the rope and yanks.

It takes me a sec too late to realize I’m still holding the other end. Then I’m flipping onto my stomach and skidding toward him, dust clouding my face. I release the rope and roll away just in time to miss a giant socked foot stomping down where my neck was. I leap into a crouch and kick the inside of Horns’s knee.

He bellows in rage, stumbling to the side.

I scamper away, hauling in a breath as I reassess the situation. My sprained fingers scream in pain. The splint is hanging off my pinky by a few remaining threads of the bandage. I sub-vocalize a message into my Band pulling up all available vehicles in the area. I pray to Buddha that there’s at least one car here in this Empty.
