Social proof
Animals will generally follow what can be referred to as herd behavior. Social proof is whereby an animal (person) assumes the behavior observed from other animals (people) in the same environment. A good example is whereby, we tend to laugh at jokes even if we do not find them funny just because other people are laughing. It is also likely that you will run if you observe many others running even if you do not know why. Herd behavior is deeply ingrained in animals and has helped them survive for years. The behavior portrayed by a collective number of people is thought of being correct. Even if it is wrong, the assumption is that there is strength in numbers .
Therefore, any decision you make is either consciously or unconsciously affected by what you have observed other people in the same situation do. The entertainment industry has already demonstrated the effectiveness of social proofing with shows that have canned laughter. Canned laughter is the sound of people laughing that is played in some scenes. The audience of the show will likely join in the canned laughter even if they do not find what is being shown to be so comical. If such an audience is, later on, asked how the show was, they will mostly say that it was full of funny scenes. However, all that was done was a psychological trick where they were put in an environment where everyone else was laughing thus they inferred that the most appropriate reaction was to laugh as well.
Social proof can be used as a means of persuasion by manipulators. All they have to do is convince you that everyone else is doing it. If they want you to get into a contract with them yet it is unclear to you, they can just show you the hundreds of other people that have signed the same contract. You will feel some assurance of security by the fact that many people have already signed the contract. Social proofing works mostly in environments where:
There is uncertainty – the target should not know how to react. It is apparent that they should not have been through a similar situation from which they can infer. This makes it such that the easy way for the target to make a decision is by observing what other people have done before.
