USING APPROPRIATE CONVERSATIONAL SKILLS

There are certain cultural expectations when it comes to interpersonal interactions before, during, and immediately after the wake and funeral. Topics of conversation are generally focused on fond remembrances of the deceased person with immediate family members. Personal conversations revolving around anything but the dearly departed with others are generally muted and kept low key. It is customary to extend some sort of condolence to those directly affected by the death of a loved one or friend, and to offer either moral or physical support. It is not the time for rambling monologues on special interest topics. What is the conversational skill level of the individual with autism in attendance? How will they react to receiving condolences from others? If the person with autism lost a close relative or friend, can they tolerate listening to conversations about that deceased person? Are they able to offer phrases of condolences to those mourning the loss of a loved one? How do you inform those in the funeral party not to trigger conversations accidently that will launch the autistic individual into an inappropriate rambling monologue?
