Finally, this study rated the trainability of various dog breeds. We will deal with these important characteristics later on, when we specifically discuss learning and intelligence in dogs.

Some two decades after the Harts’ study, I conducted a similar piece of research, rating dogs on twenty-two behavioral dimensions. The purpose of that research was to see if there were characteristics in different breeds that would make them more or less compatible with particular human personalities. My research used information from ninety-six dog specialists, including veterinarians, dog trainers of several sorts, dog judges of all kinds (obedience, conformation, field trials, search and rescue, tracking, terrier trials, and so forth), several writers of dog books, some canine psychologists, and behavior analysts. This study tried to include all of the breeds that the American Kennel Club and Canadian Kennel Club had recognized in 1995, so that I could make a broader comparison of breeds. All of the professionals did not rate all of the breeds, but at least twenty rankings had to be obtained for a breed to be included in the data analysis. In the end this gave me useable data on 133 breeds of dogs.

I isolated the breeds that had the highest rankings on a composite set of traits that could be called dominance, aggression, and protectiveness. For convenience, let’s just call these “highly dominant dogs.” Since this is larger than the Harts’ list, we will present the breed names alphabetically.
