CHAPTER SIX

'I didn't want any of it,' Lily denied, hugging herself as if cold, the shock of Daniel's will still trembling through her system. 'Not the stud, his money—none of it.'

' "The lady doth protest too much, methinks",' Dane drawled provokingly.

'It's the truth,' she declared. 'And Daniel knew it.' Which made it all the more puzzling as to why he had done this to her. He's tied me down! she realised on an angry start. He's tied me down to this damned place when he knew I've been straining at the leash to get away! 'If you must know the truth,' she snapped out irritably as she stood up, 'I hate this place!'

'The truth, Lily?' Dane mocked cynically. 'Since when have you ever dealt in the truth?'

As of now, she thought angrily. 'If there was any way I could alter what he's done, I would do.'

'There is,' Dane said, watching her through narrowed eyes as she moved restlessly around the room. Her agitation intrigued him. He wasn't at all sure what was causing it. 'Marry Radley. Then the whole lot will revert to me.'

'What?' she spun around to stare at him, her expression quite comical to him simply because he was reading it all wrong. 'Marry Mark?' she choked out incredulously.

'He's been your damned lover for long enough.' He shrugged, 'Why not make it all nice and proper now that Daniel's gone?'

'How many times do I have to tell you that Mark is not my lover?' she cried, closing her eyes in an effort to hang on to some semblance of self-control.

'As many times as you like, but I won't believe you,' Dane replied. 'What did you do, hmm? Did you wait for Danny to go to sleep at night then creep out of his bed into Radley's?'

'That's a terrible thing to say!' she gasped.

'No more terrible than you having your lover sleeping next door!'

'I refuse to listen to any of this.' On legs that were far from steady she turned to the door.

But Dane was quick. He came across the gap separating them like lightning, his hand curling painfully around her arm to spin her around to face him. 'Oh, no, you don't.' he murmured threateningly. 'You don't leave here until you give me a reasonable explanation as to why Radley had the connecting bedroom to yours!'

'He didn't!' she denied. 'He slept in his studio when he stayed here!' A custom-made room on the second floor of the house.

'But you forget,' Dane persisted. 'And one should always have a good memory when they lie as much as you do, Lily. But I caught Radley red-handed in that very room only the other day.' She started jerkily, and his mouth compressed into a satisfied smile. 'Your housekeeper had left your case in your room for me to collect. I walked into what I assumed was your room—yours and Daniel's room!' he punctuated harshly. 'And found Radley sitting at the bureau in there, sorting out his things!'

Lily dampened her dry lips, her heart beginning to pound sluggishly in her chest.
