ALTHOUGH AUNT EDITH loved family, she had her limits. Two weeks after Thanksgiving, she demanded her space after Bailey and her family suggested they would extend their stay for a month and leave for Seattle after Christmas.

“Sawyer’s here. Go home tomorrow as you planned, and I’ll see you next holiday.” Aunt Edith wore her game face. Not one to care about hurt feelings, she spoke her mind, and her family had to fall in line.

The following day, his sister and family had their bags packed and waiting in the hall. Aunt Edith clutched a wad of tissues as she inspected each family member from young to old, hugging and sniffing, saying how much she would miss them as if she hadn’t practically put them out the previous night.

Sawyer folded his arms and watched her shenanigans with amusement. Then Bailey received an alert on her phone that the airline had canceled their flights.

“What?” Aunt Edith shrieked.

Forecasters predicted St. Louis would get a few inches of early snow, but it wasn’t the same for other cities where the weather had caused backlogs.

Glancing out the window, Sawyer chuckled to himself. Served his aunt right for playing mind games. True, his niece and nephews were a handful, but they were healthy, smart...and exhausting. Yet Bailey and Aaron looked whole and content.

Sawyer wanted to experience that completeness. He had hoped that opportunity would happen in Raleigh. Unfortunately, that couldn’t with him here, and the one who attracted his attention was there. How ironic.

A few days later, his sister and family secured a flight home. Then the house was too quiet for Aunt Edith.

“I do miss Dr. Avery and Charity,” she had said one evening as she stacked the plates in the cabinet after dinner.

“Me, too.” Sawyer hadn’t realized he did as much.

Aunt Edith patted Sawyer’s cheek as she left the kitchen. “I think we should get a dog.”

Had he heard right? “And who is going to take care of it?”

“You will, silly. Good night.” Aunt Edith grinned with her perfect set of teeth, then closed her bedroom door, humming.
