Danny walked up to the large double doors dwarfed by two narrow full-length windows. Straightening his jacket, he smoothed down his hair and took a deep breath. He pressed the doorbell. A tall, thin butler answered the door.

“Hi, I’m Daniel Bruer.”

“Welcome. Mr. Delaney is expecting you.”

Danny followed the butler down the ornate hallway toward the back of the house. The open patio area was filled with clusters of people dressed in expensive cocktail party attire and sipping drinks out of crystal glasses. Another large fountain sat in the center. In the middle of it was a statue that resembled Atlas.

“You made it.”

Danny turned to see Joe’s smooth smile.

“I see your agent decided not to join you this evening.”

“No, he was busy,” Danny said.

“What do you think of my house?”

“It’s impressive.”

Joe chuckled. “Indeed. Why don’t we get you a drink, and I will introduce you to the rest of the group?”

Danny followed Joe to the bar.

“What would you like to drink?” Joe asked him. “The bar is fully stocked, so don’t be shy.”

“Could I get a glass of water?”

Joe’s brow wrinkled. “Are you joking?”

“No.”

Joe handed Danny a glass of water, and then Danny followed him to where two men were standing near the fountain with mixed drinks.

“Gentlemen,” Joe said to them. “I have someone here I would like you to meet. Daniel, this is Will Morris. He plays the bass.”

“Hello, Daniel,” Will said, shaking Danny’s hand.

Will was a few inches shorter than Joe, and his thick brown hair was styled in a pompadour. His oblong face was pleasant, and his smile revealed a row of perfect white teeth, but something unsettling about his deep-set chestnut eyes made Danny uneasy.

“And this is Boyd Markham, our drummer,” Joe said.

“Hey, Daniel,” Boyd said, taking Danny’s hand in a firm handshake. Boyd’s build was thick, and his curly brown hair was combed over to one side in a lazy wave. He wasn’t as flashy as his counterparts and seemed more genuine, but Danny decided to remain reserved.

“We thought tonight might be a perfect opportunity to play a few tunes together since we have a small crowd here,” Joe said. “Nothing complicated. You think you can handle that?”

“I didn’t know that you would want me to play. I didn’t bring my guitar,” Danny said.

“You don’t need it. If you join my band, you will have a better one,” Joe said, setting his hand on Danny’s shoulder.

“You mind if I see what guitar I am playing so I can get familiar with it?” Danny said.

“Of course. Will, you don’t mind showing Danny the stage, do you?”

“Not at all.”

“I will leave you with them and see you in ten.” Joe smiled at Danny and walked away.

“So, tell us about yourself,” Will said.

“What do you want to know?”

“Like, where you live?”

“Madison.”

“You live there your whole life?”

“No, I’m originally from Kansas.”

“Oh? Lots of farms up that way. Cows, chickens, and corn,” Will said, taking a drink from his glass.

Danny noticed his manicured nails and hid his hands in his pants pockets.
