Chapter 11
CHELSEA
âYouâre positive this is okay?â I study Markâs face, looking for any sign heâs freaking out.
âGo,â he says. âIâve got this.â
The sexiest three words a man can say, but still, Iâm nervous. Weâre standing in the doorway of his cabin with the earthy spring breeze wafting in off the pond. The sun is almost down for the count, but itâs spurting little bursts of red and orange as it disappears behind the mountains.
I turn back to Mark, whoâs radiating vibes as the worldâs foremost lumberjack nanny. The fact that heâs cradling a rabbit in his arms completes the picture.
âItâs a lot to ask,â I tell him as I scratch Long Long Peter behind his velvety ears. âYouâve barely just met Libby, and you said yourself you havenât been around kids much. Youâre sure this is okay for two whole hours?â
He adjusts the rabbit in his arms, and Iâm momentarily distracted by the size of his biceps. By the memory of having them envelop me completely.
âTwo hours in which sheâll be fast asleep the whole time,â he reminds me. âBesides, Iâm not flying solo. Iâll have a cop, a chef, a doctor, a lawyer, an international humanitarian, and a U.S. Marine whose seasonal gig is playing Santa. I think we can figure out how to pour her a glass of water if she wakes up.â
When he puts it that way, I feel silly for worrying.
But I also feel guilty for going out for a girlsâ spa night when someone may or may not be trying to harm me. âIf someoneâs out to get me, should I really be off getting a Moor peat bath?â
âWhatâs a meat bath?â
Apparently, he hasnât spent two hours studying the spa services menu like I did today. âI donât know what it is, either,â I admit. âItâs been a while since I had any sort of spa date.â
âWhich is why you should go and not worry.â
I bite my lip and glance out over the resort grounds. The towering wood buildings are bathed in sunset hues of pink and gold, and the golf course sprawls on the horizon like a sheet of green velvet. Coyote song and juniper breeze swirl together to create the most perfect blend of sound and smell, and itâs so beautiful here I want to lie down in the grass and just soak it all in.
âThe place is crawling with private security,â Mark says, misreading my sigh. âWeâve always got it, but thereâs even more with the senator coming this week. Youâre safe, I promise.â
Goosebumps ripple up my arms. Theyâve got nothing to do with the sage-laced breeze that just shivered past. âThank you.â I turn back to smile at him. âI trust you.â
Something flickers in his eyes. I canât quite read it, but itâs gone as fast as it appeared. âYou kissed her goodnight already?â he asks. âMade sure sheâs asleep and everything?â
âYes.â I bite my lip. âI owe you, Mark.â
âYou donât owe me jack.â He shifts Long Long Peter to the crook of his elbow and puts a hand on my back to usher me along.
