Chapter Thirty-Seven

The sound of a light tapping on her bedroom door caused Percy to awaken with a start. She looked down at the back of the head of her son, cuddled in her arms, sleeping. Freddy the dog, didn’t stir at Oliver’s feet.

It was confusing having a dog named after Oliver’s best friend. And Fred was also Rendell’s first name, although she never addressed him that way. To try to keep things straight, the family started calling Rendell’s son and Oliver’s best friend, Junior, leaving Freddy the dog in sole ownership of the name.

Alert, Percy checked her watch: 6:05. She and Oliver had been down for over an hour. Just a little nap, she’d told him. Warm milk and peanut butter sandwiches knocked him out every time.

The rapping came again, a little more insistent this time. She slid over to the other side of the bed so as not to disturb her son, got up, and went to the door. Relaxed for the first time in days, she opened the door to face her kid sister. Sera was leaning against the door with a smirk on her face, waving an envelope in the air.

“Somebody slid this under the door, Percy, and it’s addressed to you. So here it is, special delivery.”

Percy snatched at it, suddenly wary. She ripped at the envelope, pulling the contents out, a single sheet of paper. Sera watched her in disbelief.

“Wow, what is it, some sort of love letter?”

Percy read the missive quickly. Sera could tell right away it wasn’t a love letter. “What is it, Percy? Who’s it from? Read it to me.”

Instead of answering her sister, she asked a question. “Pop home yet?”

“He came in about ten minutes ago and went straight to the kitchen to see Mother. You know how they are.”

She rolled her eyes like a teenager. Some things never change, no matter how old you are. If you’re lucky, it’s spousal love. Percy moved past her sister and went down the hall to the kitchen.

“Hey,” said Sera, more than a little miffed. “How rude. Not even a thank-you?”

Ignoring her sister, Percy pushed at the swinging door that separated the large kitchen from the hallway. She found her parents locked in an embrace, Pop whispering into Mother’s ear and Mother giggling.

Percy backed up before they were aware of her presence. She turned but bumped into Sera. “Whoops. Sorry, Sera.”

“What gives?” Sera looked at the letter in Percy’s hand.

“Let’s just say more news from someone I don’t want to hear from.”

“Man, I know what that’s like. Donnie, this moron from work, keeps pestering me to go out with him, even though I told him over and over again I’m married! Leave me alone! I haven’t told him I’m pregnant, because I haven’t told anyone at work yet. Percy? You listening to me?”

“No.”

“Thanks a bunch.”

“Sera, where did you find this letter?”

“I saw it on the floor just inside the door. Somebody slipped it under the front door.”

“Did you open the door? See who it was?”

“Why would I? I picked it up and saw it was addressed to you.
