Chapter 10

The Haunted Book Barn is filled to the brim with bodies, ready and willing to belly up to the bar of the café to watch the latest taping of Morgan’s show, Murder, Mayhem, and Baking. The film crew is almost finished setting up as the eighties music Morgan plays on a loop chirps through the speakers and the air holds the heavy scent of fresh baked brownies. I rock back and forth softly as Huey Lewis and the News belts out “The Power of Love” and I’m transported right back to my carefree childhood when the only thing outside of my parents that I loved was my dog.

There always seems to be an uptick of townies and tourists on Saturday afternoons, and if it’s not the taping they come to see, I’m betting those sweet treats Morgan freely gives out to the audience has something to do with it.

Today’s confection is werewolf paws—brownies baked in madeleine cookie molds then artfully outlined on one end with chopped almond slivers to give them that claw effect we’re going for. Morgan and I have already whipped up a plethora of batches, so when the big baking reveal takes place, we’ll have something to show for it. After I burned a batch of almond horns last month, Morgan has decided to prepare her goodies in advance despite the fact she’s giving a cooking lesson.

My phone chirps in my pocket and I fish it out. It’s a text from Elliot.

I’m at the office in Winchester, running late. It doesn’t look as if I’ll make the taping today. But we’re still on for tonight. I can pick you up at six if that works for you.

Bummer. I was really looking forward to having a double header with Elliot today. Let’s hope our luck isn’t dwindling.

I text right back. Sounds great!

Shoot. Why did I use the exclamation point? He’s going to think I’m overeager. I am overeager, but that’s not the point.

My phone bleats, and it’s him again. Don’t do anything out of the ordinary with Harlow Waylon. She’s my suspect, Billie.

His suspect. I make a face at the phone.

Will do! I text right back and immediately regret that exclamation point again. I swear it snuck right in there.

Morgan and Mabel stand next to one of the three table displays we have set out featuring Harlow Waylon’s series, Moon Chasers, so I trot on over and Acorn trots right beside me.

Morgan has her hair flat-ironed straight as a pin, she’s clad in black, and her makeup is dramatic and dark. Mabel is a stark contrast with her bun, wire-rimmed glasses, and button-down blouse. Seeing that they’re identical twins, I’ve always been appreciative of their differences in personality.

“There’s my big boy.” Morgan gives Acorn all the lovin’ he deserves, then scoops up Grizabella off the floor as if she were picking her up out of thin air. “Someone doesn’t like to be left out of the attention.”

“I’ll take the black mop,” I say as I steal Grizzy from her.
