DANTE

He washed and organized the brushes before he locked the place up for the night and drove back to his apartment. Wren’s SUV was already parked in the driveway when he arrived, but he expected it to be there because it had taken him nearly an hour to get everything ready for the next day of work.

Dante parked on the right side of Wren’s vehicle and noted the stark differences between his old sedan and Wren’s recent-modeled SUV. The SUV was sleek and shiny with a quality paint job and electrical interior. He could see his reflection in the chrome door handles and accents. The vehicle was a little dirty from general usage, but nothing a good wash couldn’t fix.

On the other hand, Dante’s sedan was damn near twenty years old and had the wear and tear to prove it. He had replaced the bulk of the interior, but the exterior left plenty to be desired. He purchased the car a decade ago with cash much to the displeasure and warnings from the family he rarely saw.

His mother clucked her tongue, but she favored everything opulence and wealth, and she couldn’t fathom her son finding a mate with an old car and a tight budget.

His father found the whole situation to be a disappointment, but there was a reason neither of them were in his life anymore, and their opinions on his lifestyle weren’t necessarily at the top of the list.

Close. But not quite.

He cared about Zane’s opinion, but his best friend drove a car even older than his, so he had no room to talk.

Wren hadn’t commented on his vehicle, but as they grew closer, Dante wondered. How did Wren feel about his lifestyle? He always wore a charming smile, but did the old sedan and Dante’s penny-pinching ways irk him? He rarely over-thought relationships, but Wren had managed to uncover old insecurities, things he had convinced himself he’d moved on from.

Apparently not.

With a sigh, he walked inside the house, hanging his keys on the hooks just inside the door. “I’m home,” he called, scrubbing the despair from his voice.

Wren bounded into the living room, gracing Dante with a dazzling smile. “Hi. Pick a number one through five.”

Dante quirked an eyebrow. “Why?”

“Oh my god, just do it.” Wren dropped his head back on his shoulders, exposing the long column of his neck and sighing loudly. Some could’ve found his dramatics annoying, but Dante found them endearing.

“All right, three.”

“I figured you would pick three, so I made a provisional plan if you did.”

“Huh?”

“Three reverts to a dice roll, and I have a handy-dandy five-sided die right here.” He produced a black die with white lettering. “And I’m going to roll it until we get a number other than three.”

“Interesting. Why?”

“So we can decide what we’re doing for the rest of the night. You said you’ve never done anything spontaneous, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Tonight you will be because we don’t even know what we’re doing until I roll this die, and you don’t even know what the options are, so you can’t make a biased decision.
