The next morning, Lucky braced her paws against the passenger side door of Ben’s truck and stuck her nose out the window. Crisp, cool fall air, smelling of leaves, dirt, and fresh grass, wafted through the cab.

The truck was a good ten years older than Grace’s SUV, and the shocks left much to be desired. The old truck bumped and jostled as Grace reached the bottom of Baker’s Hill. Morning sunlight streaked through a gap in the trees across the road, making her squint. She pulled down the sun visor.

As Grace turned left and drove through the village, she tried to gather her thoughts. It was seven o’clock and she was not used to being on the road this early. She’d just dropped Ben at his house, so that he could open up his bookstore and bakery. He’d sent her on her way with a box of goodies for the clinic, a to-go cup of piping hot Earl Gray tea, and a lovely kiss.

What a sweetheart he is, she thought. We could very well get married, when the time is right. I might have a husband, after all these years.

She’d never officially tied the knot with Jason, Oliver’s father, though they’d lived together for a brief—and mostly troublesome—stint. After that disaster, she’d shied away from marriage and instead dated men who she knew, on some level, would never commit to a lifelong partnership. But Ben was ready to settle into old age with her. She knew this, and she felt the same way about him. A warm glow filled her as she let her mind wander toward daydreams of their happy future.

When she glanced to her right she saw the town hall looking forlorn. Yellow caution tape was strung up between the stair railings. One tail end flapped in the breeze, the other end continued around the building, wrapping it like a giant present. There were several townsfolk gathered on the sidewalk out front of the town hall. Grace slowed and waved.

She recognized Charlaine Pine at the center of the gathering, holding a clipboard. Charlaine, a short, plump woman with a round face, usually wore a long, flowing cloak in ebony, all-black clothing, and some sort of statement jewelry. Today that was a turquoise necklace with beads so large, Grace could make them out from the road.

“That must have been the committee that’s been put together to save the town hall,” she said to Lucky. “I heard Charlaine is heading it up. I hope she knows what she’s doing.”

“Me, too,” Lucky said. “I love the town hall. Whenever there’s big dinners there I get to eat lots of crumbs and run around with other dogs.”

“Two of your favorite things,” Grace said.

“Oh yeah! Favorite things are good. Another one of my very favorite things is the river. Maybe we’re heading there, now?”

“I’m afraid not,” Grace said.

“But we’re way early for the clinic,” Lucky said. “The sun isn’t even up over the trees yet!”

“True,” Grace said. “But I have a different idea about what we’ll do in the next hour, before work.
