Chapter Twenty-Six

MOST PEOPLE IN THE neighborhood had finished dinner by now and were sitting down, watching TV. Kids would be doing their homework, or sneakily gaming if their parents were distracted. I’d never had a normal life and couldn’t imagine what it would be like. Knowing me, I’d probably die from boredom.

It was dark beneath the tree as Ares and I strolled over to it. The lowest branch was fifteen feet above my head. We looked around to make sure no cars or pedestrians were in view. “Now,” I said quietly.

Ares put his hands around my waist and our eyes met. “Be careful,” he murmured as a shiver worked its way up my spine. Then he tossed me upwards as if I weighed as little as a leaf.

I landed on the branch like a cat and balanced on my toes as I took a rope out of my backpack. Tying it firmly to the branch, I dropped it down to Ares. He quickly scaled the rope, while I moved over to the trunk. Girard stayed below, but the rest of my team soon joined us. Phoebe pulled the rope up, but left it wrapped around the branch rather than removing it.

We all took up a position in branches that allowed us to see the yard. All of the cameras were pointing downwards and we were above their line of sight. Two cameras were aimed at the deck. I could cast a glamor spell from a distance, but it was harder than doing it up close.

I targeted the cameras on the deck, then cast the glamor spell. “We have a clear path now,” I told my team. “I’ll go first, then someone can throw me a rope with the hook attached to it.” The hook was just for weight rather than to anchor it to anything. The metal would cause too much damage to any surface I attached it to.

“I’ll throw you the rope,” Noah volunteered before Ares or Phoebe could beat him to it. Meredith rolled her eyes at their sullen pouts.

“Why don’t you just take one end of the rope with you?” Ares asked as I tied a second rope to a branch above us.

“It’ll ruin my balance,” I replied. “A gust of wind could yank me off course if it catches the rope. It’s safer for me to jump without it.”

“That’s a long way to jump,” he said doubtfully as he calculated the distance between the end of the branch and the deck.

“She can make it,” Phoebe said. “Harm has jumped further than that during our jobs before.”

I wasn’t sure if that was true or not, but it was going to be a challenge, that was for sure.

Handing the backpack to Phoebe, I stepped onto the long, wide branch that overhung the property. It curved from side to side, with dips and rises here and there. The limb tapered down to the bare width of my foot towards the end. It could barely support my weight when I tested it.
