Almost all of them took some pictures of me or did some selfies to put on Instagram and Twitter and Facebook and other social media channels.

It was brilliant.

I was very surprised by Dad. He couldn’t stop shouting. ‘Save the planet! Stop using plastic!’

His voice is remarkably loud.

‘That’s because I used to be an actor,’ he said.

I never knew he used to be an actor.

‘There are a lot of things you don’t know about me,’ Dad said.

I’m beginning to realise that.

The whole day was brilliant. I was feeling so happy! Then Mrs Ahmed came past. And everything went wrong.

It wasn’t her fault. She just gave me some information, which made me feel awful.

Mrs Ahmed lives on our street. She was doing her shopping with her two sons Mohammed and Joseph. They were each carrying two of those skimpy plastic bags, which fall apart as soon as you put anything heavy inside.

I said, ‘You should use reusable bags instead of those ones. It’s much better for the planet.’

Mrs Ahmed said I was right. She said it’s difficult to find the right bags at the right moment when you’re a single mother with two sons who have to be watched every minute. Then she pointed at my banner and said, ‘Haven’t you read about the environmental impact of glitter?’

I said I hadn’t.

She said, ‘Look it up.’

I did. It was awful. Glitter is literally poison for the planet. It’s even worse than plastic straws or plastic bottles.

Now I’m feeling horrible. I’m guilty. I’m ashamed. I’m a bad person. I thought I was doing the right thing, but actually I’ve just messed up the world even more than before.

Dad said, ‘Don’t worry, pumpkin. You can’t do everything right. We’re all human. We all make mistakes. But you’re doing something. You’re making a difference. That’s brilliant! You care about the planet. That’s amazing. You should feel proud of yourself. I’m proud of you, anyway. You’re the best.’

‘What about me?’ said Finn.

‘And me!’ said Becca.

‘You’re both the best too,’ Dad said. ‘Come on. Let’s shout at Mr Schnitzel a bit more.’

We all shouted at the tops of our voices: ‘Save the planet! Stop using plastic! Save the planet! Stop using plastic! Save the planet! Stop using plastic!’
