Chapter 13
So Long, Jimmy
Iâm thirsty from the trip, and as soon as we go into the kitchen I find my water and food bowls. I slurp up the water. Thereâs kibble there, too, but it doesnât look that good compared to the hot dog I had my eye on outside. I donât like how the kibble smells, and if something doesnât smell good, you shouldnât eat it.
Larry comes inside and hangs up his coat. âBrian,â I hear him say. âWhat do you think?â
âHeâs cool, Pop.â
âWhat does he look like to you?â
We gather in the living room. Larryâs in a better mood. Heâs not talking about how puny I am or what a dumb idea it was to get me. They all sit in silence for a while and study my face.
Whatâs going on, guys?
âI think we should call him Newman,â Jane says thoughtfully.
âNope,â Larry says right away. âHe doesnât look like a Newman.â
âEw, Newman. That sucks,â Brian brays.
Jane and Larry glare at him.
âWell, it does. Itâs like a teacherâs name.â
Larry shakes his finger at Brian. âLook. Iâm tired and not in the mood for your smart mouth.â
âCould we not stress, please?â Jane begs. âI made a list of possible names.â She runs up the stairs and comes right back with a pad.
âStop me when you like one,â she says a little breathlessly. âMilton, Murray.â
âMurray? Are you kidding?â Brian yells. âYou name an old bald guy Murray.â
âHarry, Ben, Logan, Bubba, Yoda, Steve, Pinsky . . .â
âPinsky?â Larry sneers.
Larryâs right about this one. Imagine introducing myself as Pinsky to a new friend.
âScratch Pinsky,â Brian orders.
âOkay,â Jane mutters. âNo need to get hostile about it.â
I trot over to sit beside Jane, since she has the list. Thereâs a rug in the living room, but it doesnât cover the whole floor. Thereâs a little strip of polished wood near Jane thatâs slippery. My front paw gets away from me. Whoops! The corner of the rug bunches up and I go flying into the side of the coffee table.
Larry and Brian burst out laughing. Jane kneels down to see if Iâm okay. Iâm fine. But I feel like a major clod. No one would ever believe I made my way between two roofs above a flood! I just look like a clumsy little puppy. A useless, puny, clumsy little puppy.
Larry looks at Brian and says, âWhy donât we name him Thud?â
âThatâs so mean, Dad!â Brian says, but heâs still laughing.
Jane scowls and goes on with her list. âHerbie, Kramer, Rogerââ
Larry cuts in. âI think Thud works. Heâs a klutz. He flops over if you look at him.â
Jane gives Larry a dirty look.
âItâs a lame name,â Brian says, getting back to business.
âWe donât have to name him tonight,â Larry says restlessly.
Yes! If we wait, maybe someone will come up with Jimmy.
âI donât know.â Jane shrugs.
Suddenly everybodyâs getting grouchy.
âWait!â Brian says. âI think I got it.â
âWell, get on with it then,â Larry snaps.
âOh, relax,â Jane snaps right back. She isnât one bit afraid of Larry! I wish I could be brave like her.
