I woke up early the next morning, the way I did every morning, ever since I had been a child. I'd always loved the early hours of the day, when no one but me was awake. No one to watch me or judge me. No expectations to live up to.

This morning felt different from every other morning, though, because I didn't wake up by myself. My body was draped over Wes', but Wes was still asleep, and didn't seem to mind. I closed my eyes again, even though I knew I wouldn't go back to sleep. I just wasn't ready to let go of this moment. Face the world.

Think about what I'd done.

This thing with Wes, it should have been a one-off. A one-night stand. Now we were on our third date… and I wasn't ready to stop here. I wanted a fourth date, hell, maybe even a fifth.

Groaning, I rolled over and off Wes, needing to stop this train of thought. Some fresh air would help. At least I hoped it would, so I got ready to brave the outside world. I zipped the tent back up behind me as I left.

The campground looked different by the light of day. Less intimate, somehow, but more beautiful. The air was chilly, but the sun peeked through the trees and painted everything in a golden glow. Somewhere to my right, a bird sang the song of its people and helped me feel a little more awake.

I wandered a short ways into the trees and took in my surroundings, breathed in the forest air. Wes had said there was a lake nearby. Maybe I could find it. A winding path spread through the woods in front of me, and I followed it for a while. On the way, I got my phone out to type a short message to Wes, letting him know where I'd gone in case he woke up and worried.

Once that was done, I tapped to show my notifications. Jenny had sent me a message the night before. Are we still on for drinks this weekend?

Then an hour later: Why are you not responding? You can't just ditch me. I'm your fake ex-girlfriend.

Smiling at the messages, I tapped on the screen to text back. Sorry, got busy. I'll call you later.

'Got busy,' seemed like such an understatement that even typing the words make me cringe. Yeah, I'd gotten busy by putting on manties and driving out into the woods with Wes to beg him to fuck me... but I'd settled for a blowjob, so was I still a virgin or not?

Did it even matter? Who was in charge of these definitions?

I brightened when I spotted something blue peeking through the trees. Was that...? Yes, I'd found the lake. Perfect. I strode over to the shoreline, cutting through the trees until the lake lay silent before me. Morning fog rose over the water in the distance where I could barely see the woods on the other side of the shore. A light breeze ruffled my hair as I sat on damp ground, alone with my thoughts.
