Chapter Sixteen
Larry McMurray is a world-class asshole. Heâs also an amazing golfer, plays to a plus three handicap on the golf course, and two shots better than that in the bedroom. Heâs also a good teacher. Iâll give him that. And he has a winning personality, but he also has an ego that knows no bounds. Heâs the quintessential golf pro, tall, slim, fair-haired, and could probably have made it on the PGA tour had his nerves not let him down when the big moments came. They had come, several times, but never once had he been able to pull the trigger.
He was on the putting green when we arrived, giving a lesson to a young lady, a knockout, a blonde, dressed from head to toe in pink, even the handle of her putter. It didnât look like he was going to finish anytime soon, so Jacque and I headed to the lounge to wait. Lo and behold, there was my father, August, glass in hand, leaning on the bar, engaged in an animated conversation with his friend Judge Henry Strange.
âHarry, my boy,â August said, turning to greet us, âand Jacque, too. How nice to see you. What would you like to drink?â
âDad, Henry,â I said, âitâs good to see you both. A Blue Moon for me, no slice. Jacque? How about you?â
âIâll have a grapefruit juice, please.â
âA grapefruit juice?â Henry Strange said, shaking his head. âThatâs just not civilized. I always thought better of you, Jacque.â
âNow den, Judge, I donât tâink you know me dat well at arl.â
I had to smile. Jacque knew the judge better than he knew her. She was putting on her Jamaican accent just for him, knowing how much he loved it. And, I have to admit, I loved it too. Still do.
âSo,â August said. âWhat are you doing here on a Tuesday morning, Harry? Canât be work. Not here, can it?â
I swallowed the first swig of my Blue Moon. Whew, thatâs better!
âI just need a word with the Pro, is all. Right now, heâs giving a putting lesson, so heâll probably be a while. I had an idea I might find you in here. Did you play today?â
August Starke is one of those larger than life figures with a booming voice and a personality to match. He dominates any room he happens to be in, be it a lounge or a courtroom. Heâs sixty-seven years old with a head of thick silver hair, and heâs tall, an inch taller than I am, lean, toned. Heâs one of the top lawyers in his field and one of the most competitive men youâll ever meet, in the courtroom, at the poker table, or on the golf course.
Henry Strange is a different cat altogether. A longtime federal judge, he, my father, and ADA Larry Spruce have been friends for more years than I can remember. Most Sunday mornings, the four of us play golf together. Which can be fun, or not, depending on what kind of mood my father happens to be in.
