WITH A SPEED AND CAUTION that defied her rebellious purpose, Kiera flitted down the hallways like a ghost, rushing past the golden orb of torchlight and keeping to the shadows. Even from the upper levels, she could hear the soldiers drilling in the courtyard, but as long as she kept to the perimeter, there wasn’t a way she might be seen. Of course, there was a moment when the walls would break and she’d have to cross in the open. She remembered the way their eyes had pinned her when she’d done it just a few nights before. But they’d never make it up the stairs by the time she got to where she was going. Once there, she would be at the mercy of someone far greater.

I don’t imagine he likes to share.

“Seven hells,” she whispered aloud, pulling at the folds of her cloak.

A gift from the fair folk, the fine material was perfect for travel and cool mountain hikes, but was nothing except a punishment to her now. She thought, with sudden remembrance, of the other such cloaks she’d seen in the smoking remains of the coastal village, the sad trail of people heading slowly up the beach. She thought of Lissianna and her company of loyal soldiers, riding on swift horses to the warm southern lands. They had also gone searching for alliances, for recruits.

I hope she’s having better luck than us.

There was a break in the wall, then suddenly it was upon her—the shaded corridor became a terrace, putting her on display for all the world to see. She paused just a breath behind the line of shadow, then in a moment of sudden inspiration, she pulled a loose stone from the base of a sconce and threw it as hard as she could, back the way she’d just come.

There was a distant clatter, and a pause in the voices beneath her. By the time she darted across the open pathway, the sweaty heads that had been locked in fierce combat, were turned the other way. It would have made their fearsome commander scream in frustration, but while the men had been endowed with tremendous size and muscles, not much could be said in the way of brains.

With a secret smile, she slipped back into the shadows—remembering the pathway like she’d taken it a dozen times before. Around two corners, then a third, and then she saw it.

The gilded archway, cut into the stone wall.

What if he’s not there?

The thought struck suddenly, like a bolt of lightning, freezing her in place. With a twist of nerves, her eyes shifted back towards the open terrace, where she could still see the faint glow of sunlight. By no logic she could possibly explain, she had supposed that if she could make it to Mierko, he would stand as a temporary protector, waving off his men with that charming smile.

Of course, it was no real protection. But there was an unknown strategy to whatever he was doing, keeping the friends penned behind the iron gate, and she sensed that, at least for now, he wanted her alive.
