Chapter Fourteen

I don’t know why I’m so disappointed. Travis was right all along. It’s always the spouse (or in this case, the spouse’s lover). My admiration for Vivienne’s talent blinded me to the obvious truth. I must be the world’s worst amateur detective.

On the way back to our tent, I fill Travis in on catching Vivienne and Cameron in their slimy embrace, making sure to tell him every detail of their conversation. He shakes his head and grunts but doesn’t say a peep.

We arrive at our tent, and Travis jumps in the shower, but I’m too wired up to join him. I pace the living area, thinking (okay, obsessing) about how wrong I’ve been about Vivienne Starling this whole time.

Travis steps out of the shower and wraps a towel around his waist.

“Go ahead. Say I told you so,” I blurt.

He snorts. “We’ve been married less than a week, but I still know better than to tell my wife I told you so.”

Paco looks up at me from his spot next to the couch. Good to know you didn’t marry him just for his looks.

“While Vivienne was busy throwing Andy and Carla Wagner under the bus, her boyfriend was the guilty one all along,” I fume.

Travis briskly dries his hair with a towel. “Seems that way.”

“And to think, I wanted her autograph! Boy, she sure fooled me. All that crying and ‘my poor sweet Oliver’ spiel. Do you think maybe something is off with my Spidey sense?”

Travis tosses the damp towel over a chair. “You only heard the last part of their conversation,” he reminds me. “They could have been talking about almost anything. You never actually heard Cameron say he killed Oliver. Right?”

“What else could they have been talking about? And who is this mysterious person who won’t say anything? Do you think someone saw Cameron kill Oliver, and now she’s blackmailing him?”

“She?” he asks.

I replay the conversation in my head. “Cameron definitely said she won’t say anything because her reputation is on the line too, so yes, it’s definitely a she. All I know is Vivienne sounded genuinely upset. Cameron said he didn’t tell her because he didn’t want her to flip out … Which means Vivienne was in the dark about Oliver’s murder. Of course! That’s it. It was all Cameron’s doing.”

Travis considers this. “It’s possible.”

“It’s more than possible,” I say, my voice rising in excitement. “I was just so taken aback by that whole hug and ‘I adore you’ shtick that I haven’t had a chance to properly digest it all. Vivienne was shocked because she had no idea what Cameron was up to. She might be guilty of adultery but not conspiracy to commit murder.” I let out a breath. “Thank goodness I wasn’t completely wrong about her.”

“Maybe,” Travis replies cautiously. “But remember, you didn’t actually hear Cameron admit to killing Oliver. We don’t know anything for certain.”

“There’s no maybe about it. Except … yuck! How could Vivienne be having an affair with someone like Cameron Grimes?”

“You mean because of the age difference?”

“No.
