Itâs a perfect night for a stroll. On the one side, youâve got the island all lit up and alive, on the other, just the black moonlit sea, and starry sky. I love looking out, into the nothingness, focusing on the sound of the tide. Itâs like being pulled from the real world and dropped straight into relaxation.
As chilled-out as I feel right now, Iâm also excited.
âI canât believe thereâs a 5,000 Euro prize,â I squeak. âAnd weâre winning.â
âWe did cheat,â he reminds me.
âWe did,â I reply. âBut that was before we knew it was for money. We just thought we were messing with my ex.â
âThatâs also true,â he replies.
âImagine what a person could do with 5,000 Euro,â I say, twirling around on the sand. Then I remember that Freddie is probably a millionaire. Freddie winning 5,000 Euro is probably the equivalent of me finding a twenty-pound note in a handbag I havenât used for a while. âWell, I could certainly do a lot with it. I could pay off whatâs left of my wedding, for a start, just cancel the whole mistake out. I could put some towards buying the house off Daniel, if thatâs even possible⦠I suppose Iâll need to find somewhere of my ownâ¦â
Iâm getting carried away.
âLetâs win it, then,â Freddie says casually. âWell, win it together, but you can have it.â
âWhat?â
âLetâs play â properly, without cheating â and let's win. If we take this seriously, I think we have a good chance. Weâve done the part where we answer questions⦠Weâve got a real shot, Lila.â
âBut⦠weâre not even a real couple?â
âSo what?â He laughs. âWhatâs the difference? Thereâs two of us, we were going to spend the holiday hanging out together anyway. The only real difference between us and the others is that they share a bed.â
âSo weâre more like a married couple, is what youâre saying,â I joke. âDo you really think we could win?â
âI do,â he replies. âAnd if we donât, weâll have fun trying. Wasnât tonight fun?â
âIt certainly was. Seeing that look on Daniel and Evaâs faces â my gosh.â
âSoâ¦â
âIf we did win together, I couldnât just take the whole prize,â I say.
âLila, Iâm doing OK for money,â he responds. âThe movie industry pays quite well.â
I smile.
âOkay, sure, Iâm in,â I say.
I can feel the excitement rushing through my veins, giving me life. To be on such a high, after feeling so down in the dumps⦠it almost makes it all seem worth it.
I hug myself as a cool breeze glides over the beach. I donât know if itâs the sea air, the excitement of the day or a combination of both, but a wave of tiredness washes over me. I yawn.
âShall we head back?â I suggest. âIâm pretty tired and itâs starting to get a bit cold, isnât it?â
âSure,â he replies. âIâd offer you my jacket if I had one.â
âWhat a gentleman,â I say with a smile.
âPeople never think I am,â he says. âPeople think Iâm going to be the arrogant, sex-mad deviant I play in the movie.
