Chapter 22

“Y

ou’re wasting your time,” the voice in the Ed Anderson’s head said.

“Go away,” he said out loud and then looked around to make sure no one had taken the seat at the small table behind him.

“Where am I supposed to go?”

Ed didn’t answer. Why should he? This other persona, The Wind, was no more than a creation of his mind. He would not acknowledge it. The screen filled with a new website discussing schizophrenia. Every website gave him hope. He would fight this illness. Yes, that’s what it was, an illness. A few pills and zap, it would be gone.

The laughter erupted again in his head, and this time he had to fight to not laugh out loud. He had to stay in control.

“You can’t get rid of me. I’m you. We both know you’ve been a coward too long. What would you have done just an hour ago when they were questioning you. You almost hyperventilated.”

“No,” he said out loud and again looked around. This time he noticed a woman across the room give him an inquisitive look.

The laughter again, and the voice in his head continued. “You know you panicked. You begged me to help. Over nothing, you fell apart over nothing. They knew Sofi left the bar with us.”

Ed wanted to scream “there is no us,” but he knew he did indeed panic. He hadn’t known what to say when they knocked on his door and asked to come in. They had looked past him and into the room. He wanted to slam the door, to hide whatever they could see, but The Wind assumed control, and Ed had acquiesced.

“Please come in,” The Wind had said, and the two ship’s officers entered his cabin. “What can I do for you?”

The short officer, a red haired, stocky man looked around a second before looking at Ed. “Yesterday, we have reason to believe a Miss Sofi Poldark left the poolside bar and returned to this cabin with you.”

“Yes, I’m afraid we had both been drinking, officer, but I assure you everything we did was consensual. If she or anyone is making an allegation that it wasn’t, then it simply isn’t true. She said she was traveling with a man who treated her badly. I cautioned her that maybe it wasn’t a good idea, but she didn’t want to hear it. If she’s saying now that I took advantage of her, it simply isn’t true.”

“May we look around?” the officer had asked.

“Of course. Seriously, if Sofi is saying I took advantage of her, she’s only doing so to protect herself against her boyfriend.”

Their search had been cursory. “What time did she leave?”

“I’m not really sure. I fell asleep after it got dark, and when I woke she was gone. I glanced at the clock, and it was two something or other.”

The two officers thanked him and left the cabin.

He knew now, as he had then, that The Wind had controlled his behavior and his answers. He had indeed acquiesced.

“You didn’t acquiesce,” The Wind roared in his mind.
