CHAPTER 16

NICHOLAI

I COULD WATCH HER sleep in my arms for hours. After tonight, and what awaited us in the morning, it would be smarter to sleep. But her scent of the ocean’s breeze kept me awake. I didn’t think I could ever get enough of her. It would be cruel of me to wake her for more. It would be selfish, and I needed to rein in my needs for hers. As much as my bond urged me to take care of her needs first, mating was a different question. It demanded attention above all else. I’d need to practice self-control to give her time to adjust. Especially because she doesn’t feel the full effect, her heart being bound by another spell unfulfilled would make an impact.

Seeing her filled with pleasure, especially after everything she’s been through, was my sole mission in life. I breathed out a breath of satisfaction and feathers rustled around us. I chuckled to myself. She hadn’t notice how much I’d bitten and how much she’d torn at the sheets with her hands. But I chuckled at our true sign of mating being spread all around us. It was even bigger than the fake one we’d orchestrated, where we had torn the sheets and she’d held a terrified look on her face at what was to come.

She knew what we were then and was afraid of the real thing. But now, when it happened, she didn’t even notice. It was a result of our pleasure. Our trust. Nothing to be afraid of. Nothing to hide.

I caressed her cheek, moving messy locks of auburn hair from it to reveal the freckled skin she hid behind. Oh, my precious. You are mine forever and nothing will tear us apart. I sighed once more and gazed at her until my eyes closed, too.
