Chapter Nine

Mac told Karen that they could manage without her if she wanted to go home, after she spoke with police, but the determined young woman refused. She wasn’t about to let an encounter with a psycho derail her.

Detective Harris arrived within half an hour of Mac’s call and questioned the young woman thoroughly. When Karen had told her entire story and went back to work, stocking the candles, he pulled Mac aside.

“When does Dorothy Feldman get in?” he asked.

“Dotty isn’t coming in today,” Mac replied, looking at him curiously and wondering at the intensity of his question. “She called in sick.”

“Did she now?” the detective raised an eyebrow. “She ever do that before?”

Mac thought for a moment.

“Not that I can recall, but it is cold and flu season, you know.”

“Uh-huh,” Harris looked as though he wanted to roll his eyes. “I’ll go over the footage and run it through some facial recognition software, see if we can find your ‘Creepy Guy,’” he said, heading out the door. “I’ll be in touch. Let me know if anything out of the ordinary happens again.”

“I will, thanks,” Mac murmured, looking troubled.

“One last thing,” Harris asked, his hand on the doorknob. “Do you have a lost and found?”

“Well, we have a box that we keep in the storage room with items that are found,” Mac stared at him.

“Please bring that out. I’d like to look through it before I go,” the detective requested.

Mac gave him a funny look, wondering why on earth he’d be interested in their lost and found box, but told him that she’d be right back and hurried off to get it.

The detective dumped the contents of the box on the counter and poked through it with a pen, seeming frustrated when he didn’t find anything of note.

“Mind if I hang on to this for a few days?” he asked, brushing the contents back into the box with a gloved hand.

“No, not at all. If someone comes in looking for an item, I’ll just make a note,” Mac shrugged.

“If someone comes in looking for a woman’s glove, take their name and number and get it to me right away,” Harris directed.

“Sure, no problem,” Mac agreed, wondering why he’d want to know about a woman’s glove.

“I appreciate your cooperation,” the detective said, picking up the box and heading for the door.

She stared after him, biting her lip, and wondering why he wanted to question Dotty again? Surely the sweet grandmotherly lady didn’t have anything to do with what happened to Davis Clifton…
