“Hey. Little birdy. Is this you?” Anya said and looked down at her chest, where her Sun’s Heart beat happily within her ribcage. She’d always been a little snippy with authority, maybe had something of a temper. But she’d never delighted in ripping anybody apart and burning them to cinders.

Granted, she had also never really done that before, at all, prior to the invasion. And she supposed the aliens weren’t really the same as humans. They had come here and started murdering people first, after all.

Still, after her conversation with the glowing bird a couple days ago, she wasn’t so sure this feeling of mad elation during battle was her own.

“Birdy?” Anya said again.

“Anya?” somebody said above her. Anya jumped and then looked up through the hole she had made in the floor. Samaira peered down from above, a few smears of blood on her face and clothes, but otherwise intact. Small threads of blue light emitted from the sparkling azure gem in her tiara and caressed her face, neck, and shoulders. Wherever they touched, any injuries vanished, and her clothes were cleaned.

The threads were mostly focused on Chandrali, who had returned to her house cat form and was clutched to Samaira’s chest. Her white fur was more than a bit bloody, but the cat was still breathing and alert.

“Oh! Hey. You all right? And your cat?” Anya asked, aware she was blushing but hoped it wouldn’t show in the dim glow of the mall’s emergency lighting. Having a new acquaintance catch her talking to the front of her shirt wouldn’t be among the best impressions to make.

“Yeah, thanks to you. Mostly some superficial cuts and scrapes, nothing I can’t heal. You were amazing, though,” Samaira said. “Chandrali and I mopped up those little ones no problem. That refrigerator was a nightmare. It wasn’t anything like that during our first fight. It specifically changed itself to take me and Gary out. If you hadn’t been here…”

“Nasty fuckers, aren’t they?” Anya said and looked down at the dead husk of the alien. She kicked its side with a hollow bang.

“Oh! Oh! Data stream! Alien data stream!” Felix said and darted about in the air around Anya’s head. “Level-ups too! And RAC! And-and-and—”

“Take a breath buddy,” Anya said. “We’ll deal with it when we’re out of here.”

“I got the data stream too. Sorry Felix got to it first. I’ll try to do better next time, but I doubt it,” Boo said beside Samaira. She rolled her eyes.

“My AI needs therapy,” Samaira said. “So, head back to Gary?”

Anya nodded and floated herself back up through the hole in the ceiling/floor. Both women and cat returned to the roof where Samaira paused.

“Uh, Chandrali is still a bit wounded. If it’s okay, could you maybe give me a lift?” she asked.

“Yeah, no problem. I can just float you guys back with me,” Anya replied.

“Do I need to grab onto you or anything?”

“Not unless you want to,” Anya said as a joke, then realized how it sounded and cleared her throat.
