Some dogs and cats need a few more calories, just like there are some humans who need to gain weight. This is a bigger problem for dogs on a grain-free diet as grains provide the calories. If you are feeding your dog a grain-free diet and he or she has lost too much weight, add in sweet potato or beans. If your dog is not allergic to grain, whole wheat pasta or brown rice are good sources of calories to help your dog maintain an ideal weight. Sweet potatoes and quinoa are also excellent grain-free options to provide sufficient calories.

However, do be aware that there are health issues that can cause weight loss. Be sure to keep your holistically minded veterinarian in the loop when working with weight loss issues. Diabetes, kidney failure, hyperthyroidism in cats, and even cancer can cause unexplained weight loss.
