Jennifer watched from her seat as Paxton Bannister returned with the classroom dormitory assignments.

Chelsea and Greg stood beside Joe, Marcus, and Eric Schwartz, watching as Paxton slowly began calling out people’s names, tallying everyone in their census.

Camellia was sitting next to Jenny, fussing with her shirt as she usually did when she got nervous.

Over half of the girls and roughly a third of the boys had changed into their gym clothes. In a few odd cases, people were wearing shorts, jeans, or a regular skirt if they happened to have a spare set of clothes in their locker.

There were quite a few girls who remained in their dresses. Jenny assumed that they had decided to use their gym clothes as pajamas and changed back into their dresses before returning to the ballroom this morning.

Chelsea Morton was one of those girls. She was still wearing her bright apricot orange dress. Greg, like many of the guys, was wearing his suit but had removed the vest and tie.

The late Sophomore Class Princess had changed into her P.E. sneakers though. Almost none of the girls were still wearing their heels or dress shoes, except for maybe the rare, comfortable flat.

Chelsea had also let her hair down. It hung loosely to her shoulders. She didn’t have the length or volume that Jenny did to justify tying it back into a ponytail, but the reasoning was the same.

The party was over.

Even those still dressed formally didn’t look like they were attending a dance, they looked like they were at a funeral.

Jenny couldn’t help but think of what everyone actually looked like. She’d caught a glance of maybe two dozen students in various mirrors. While there were some unique damaged features to people, such as the way Darren’s limbs had been broken against the stairwell, most things were the same.

The way everyone had been literally broiled alive felt like their humanity had been stripped from them along with their souls. There was no amount of make-up or embalming fluid to fix what had become of them. Everyone that wasn’t cremated (or rather, fully cremated) would have to have a closed-casket funeral.

Jenny had also found that she was not alone in having burns uncover private places. Several girls were in a similar situation to her, their dresses having been torn or scorched away by the blast of fire. She had also seen one of the guys have everything below his waist made bare by a chance situation, likely being in the restroom when the explosion happened.

She was feeling less uniquely exposed … especially considering who would end up witnessing her that way.

In the living world, the only people who would see her body like that would be a firefighter and a coroner. Probably some kind of police investigator also, but that should be all of the strangers.

Jenny’s parents would need to see her no matter what, to identify her. Hopefully they’d only be shown the left side of her face.

That wouldn’t be enough for her mom though. She would want to hold her, even just for a moment, to say goodbye.
