THE LUMBERJACK

For a day or so there hadn’t been anything between us

But the sound of the saw.

He was sore at something—

Sore at himself, I guess,

Though I didn’t know for sure. He was sore so much of the time

That I couldn’t be bothered. I’d just shut up on the talk,

That’s all.

I had to anyway, to keep my end of the saw going.

When he got sore he worked harder than a Swede.

So we were bucking up a log

When, all of a sudden

In the middle of the cut,

He straightened up and said,

“Let’s pull the plug.”

I asked, “Why?”

He said, “We’ve worked here two weeks already.

I’m beginning to feel like an old head

On the job.”

I said, “All right, let’s go.”

So we threw the saw and axe into the brush

And went.
